For over two decades, Octave One, the Detroit techno collective founded by the Burden brothers, has been a staple in DJ playlists worldwide, creating timeless dancefloor anthems. Led by core members Lenny and Lawrence Burden, Octave One debuted in 1990 with the track I Believe on the compilation Techno 2: The Next Generation. With regular contributions from siblings Lynell, Lance, and Lorne, the group has produced classic hits, most notably the 2000 single Blackwater, which has sold over a million copies and remains a fixture in sets by DJs like Little Louie Vega and Jeff Mills.
Octave One has continually evolved, blending the energy of live performance with studio innovation. In 2015, they released Burn It Down on their own 430 West Records, merging elements of funk and soul into techno. Tracks like Whatever She Wants, inspired by a set they played with Disclosure, and collaborations with Blackwater vocalist Ann Saunderson on Jazzo/Lose Myself highlight their expansive sound.
The Burden brothers also run 430 West/Direct Beat Records, a label essential to the rise of independent electronic music in the '90s, with releases from artists like Aux 88 and Rolando. Known for their remix work with Massive Attack, Inner City, and Rhythm is Rhythm, Octave One continues to push the boundaries of techno-soul, bridging classic influences with cutting-edge electronic production.
